Media Experimentation

Media Experimentation

1. Plastic

Plastic will be draping or hanging. This will be done in layers to form the skirt

For example:

2. Newspaper

3. Magazines

I have already done using magazines before.

Magazines are colorful and it has a lot of designs but it would be hard to find several used magazines especially since we don't have a lot of magazines available.

Paper 2 - Design Paper

Brainstorm:

Textile:

  • Dress
  • Skirt and Top
Dress

For textile, I decided to do a dress. A dress because I can use different patterns to make it interesting.

I wanted to do a dress in the theme of classic. An elegant dress made out of fabric, that would look good in special occasions. But I realized I didn't have a sewing machine, and sewing everything by hand would be difficult and it would take a lot of time.

In order to avoid using a sewing machine, and still make a dress, I will make a dress made out of recyclable materials. Recyclable materials such as plastic, garbage bags, cardboard, newspaper, aluminium foil, old magazines and can tops.

I chose to do clothes since I have already tried to make clothing before out of recycled materials.

Inspiration:

Theme: Opposites

I chose the theme opposites because I came across Betsey Johnson, a fashion designer who creates dresses that are very feminine and over the top, which I like. I didn't want the whole dress to be too feminine, so I decided to contrast it with a part of the clothing which is more simple and less feminine.

That's why I chose to do it as feminine vs. masculine

Theme: Seasons

Another dress that I wanted to make from recycled materials is in the theme of seasons. It is a dress made up of recycled materials that all symbolize different seasons (winter, summer, spring, autumn)
For winter, i'll use recycled white paper, which signifies snow. For autumn, i'll use withered leaves which would suggest autumn. For spring, I'll use old magazine cut outs of flower to represent spring. And for summer, i'll use old magazine cutouts of tropical fruits to represent summer

Each season has different kinds of clothing you can wear. Like for summer, you wear colourful clothes, and in spring, you wear more printed clothes. Instead of wearing a certain type of clothing in each season, I just put all the seasons in one dress.

Choice:

The dress i'm going to create is the dress in the theme of opposites. Feminine vs. Masculine because it will be too complicated to look for magazines with photos of tropical fruits and flowers.

The top part of the dress will represent the masculine part. It will be a simple top since most men shirts are simple in a dark colour.

The skirt will represent the feminine part. It will be colorful and bright contrasting the masculine part.
