SALVADOR DALI

Artist: SALVADOR DALI
Title: THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY
Media: Oil on canvas

What do you see?

It shows a number of melted clocks under heat. Some components in the piece are shown solid, such as the box on the left and the tree branch. Some parts are more soft or distorted, like the melted clocks, and the odd form in the middle.

What do you feel?

The artwork made me quite confused because of the bizarreness of the photo. How weird it is seeing melted clocks which is unusual. Also, it was confusing because of all the possible hidden meanings in the piece. Like what message was he trying to convey by melting clocks. Could it be some message about time? The oddness of the piece is what makes it interesting. It catches the audience's eyes and makes you want to pay attention to every detail in the art which could convey a message.

Elements and Principles

It's interesting because of the different shapes and forms he made. Such as the solid and geometric shapes, like the two rectangular shapes on the left and the softer more fluid shapes like the melted clocks and the odd shape in the middle. His lines made for the clocks were successful because it made it look believable which adds to the bizarreness of the art.

He communicated space by drawing a horizon line, which makes parts of it look closer and others look further. Also he created space by proportioning. By making the cliff smaller than the clocks, it looks like the cliff's further away.

He has done value in order to show were the light hits the surface. The way that some areas are exposed in the light, while some areas are not as exposed as others are. The objects that are really exposed in the light are those which are solid shapes, like the box on the left and the cliff on the right. While those objects which are fluid-like are under less light.

The contrast between the colours help in creating emphasis between the clocks and the background. Like how the background is black, while the odd form and clock in the middle is in a lighter colour which emphasizes the clock.
